Welcome to the Northern Health School site.

Northern Health School is one of three New Zealand regional health schools, responsible for the education support of students too unwell to attend their regular school. We were established in 2000 and have been providing both community, in-home and hospital based teaching since then.

If you are interested in applying for our support, please click the About the Northern Health School tab to see if the student meets our criteria.

To apply for admission to the school you need to use two forms, the application form which the family fills in and a medical form which is filled in by your specialist:

These can be sent to The Northern Health School, Private Bag 99907 Newmarket, Auckland.

For further information please call 09 5203531 or 0800 153002 or email admin@nhs.school.nz.

New Board of Trustees Announced

As with all other state schools in the country, the Northern Health School Board has a three year term of office and the Board's term finishes this year.  Health School Boards are appointed by the Minister, following an application process and the following members have been confirmed and will commence their duties at the May Board meeting, following our annual meeting:

Richard Abel, Jerome Cudmore, Maxine Moana-Tuwhangai, Michael Stowers and Heather Moore.  The staff trustee is elected from the school staff and we can now confirm that Jillian Holland is the staff trustee for the new Board.  Congratulations to you all!

Lions Club Donation

On Wednesday 12th May, the Waikato Unit of NHS was represented by teacher Sue McLeish at the annual combined Morrinsville, Morrinsville Pakeke and Tahuna and Districts Lion’s Club dinner in Morrinsville. Each year Lions club members work hard collecting slinkies (stillborn calves) from local farms and distribute the money raised to schools in their vicinity.

We feel very privileged to be included in with this group and were delighted to receive a cheque for one thousand dollars. In previous years we have used this money for exciting things like a new microscope and digital camera. This year we will put the money towards new library books and resources for life skills.

Our 10th Birthday

This year the Health Schools turn 10 and we at Northern will be celebrating ten years of working with students who have high health needs with a series of "birthday parties" across the school's 14 different Units.  The Board and staff would like to acknowledge the nearly 10,000 students we have worked with in that time and their families.  We have enjoyed our time with you and wish you a happy Health School birthday as well.

Ministerial Visit

The Associate Minister of Education, Heather Roy visited the school on November 4.  Heather has responsibility for special education and came to find out more about what we do and how we do it.  The visit included some time at Starship and Ronald McDonald House as well as our administration office in Mountain Road.  Maggie (one of our teaching staff from Whangarei) demonstrated how she works on line with students from the far north and there was an opportunity to answer questions and to showcase the school.  The photo shows Heather and Sam having an educational "moment" at our Ronald McDonald unit.
