You will have a close working relationship with Wilson Centre therapists and with staff of Wilson School, but the NHS Wilson school unit has a dedicated teaching space and is separate from the Wilson School.

Northern Health School’s (NHS) Wilson Centre unit staff provide education services to students temporarily resident at Wilson Centre who are unable to attend their regular school because of their high health needs.

NHS staff have close working relationships with Wilson Centre therapists and with the staff of Wilson School but the NHS Wilson Centre unit, based in a teaching space at Wilson Centre, is separate from Wilson School and is independently administered and funded.  The NHS Wilson Centre school unit was established in 2004 to incorporate the rehabilitation unit previously attached to Wilson School in Takapuna. This decision was made because students attending the rehabilitation unit met the regional health school admission criteria.

While some students are seen in their Wilson Centre residential setting, most attend the teaching space in the mornings. There are generally 5 to 6 students in attendance at any one time but these numbers fluctuate depending on admissions to the centre. Student length of stay in the Wilson Centre varies but most students attend the NHS Wilson Centre for six to eight weeks.

NHS has school units across the Upper North Island, including New Plymouth, Gisborne, Tauranga, Northland and several units across the Auckland region.

ICT is an integral part of Northern Health School’s administration, programme development and student record activities. Teachers in all of our units must be prepared to use ICT extensively in the course of their work.
